Someone asked how does it go downhill? We put it on the Buck-o-meter and it will do 4% with a 1/2 pound of solder on the tender and no worm gear bucking.

The new 2-8-0 has a lower boiler and the drivers are now 51 instead of 52. The lower boiler makes a big difference in appearance. Now the modeler won't have to do the boiler lowering.

I've got some MDC old time Consolidation conversions kicking around still. Interested in seeing what I did?

I sure would be. I've got serveral of the old MDC/Roundhouse kits of the 2-8-0 in HOn3. Really interested in seeing how the boiler was lowered. With the addition of a can motor and detailing they really make a decent loco.

Ok I dug up these three old projects from the 80s and 90s. I used to be into old time model railroading and there wasn’t too much good small steam then. You may remember. The first one is an MDC consolidation I turned into CPR V1a 0-8-0 switcher It had a new Mashima open frame motor and NWSL gearing installed. I threw away the old boiler and built one of brass tubing covered with layers of styrene. The cab and tender are scratched from styrene. I swapped out the drivers for TYCO 61” ones to get rid of the brass sheen. The domes are turned from laminated layers of styrene on my Dremel. Rivets impressed with a ponce wheel. You can count em if you want to Jim. Cab curtains were the most fun from lead foil wine bottle tops. (HIC)…

Ok, I told you that I dug them up. This one is suffering from Boxitis. The zinc is bleeding through the paint on the frame. This is a Richmond compound consolidation with a Belpaire firebox. The domes are again turned styrene, as are the cylinders. The small High Pressure cylinder is on the engineer’s side and the larger Low Pressure one on the fireman’s side. “Richmond” is spelled out in Slater styrene letters. Its lost the MV lense for the headlight. The third shot on the trestle you can see the difference in cylinder sizes. The pilot was built up from styrene strip.

The third one I turned into a CPR U2a 0-6-0. See I’m getting better with the domes. I really liked the switcher footboards on the side of the tender on this one. I think this has a can motor in it. By the way the fireman is scratched using John Allen’s technique of goop on a wire skeleton. I saved all my styrene turnings and melted them in Testors liquid cement to make the goop.
