The cylinder block, valve gear and rods were installed on the chassis then tested to see that the assembly rolled smoothly on a piece of track.
Then the gearbox and boiler support were installed.
The front engine was set aside untill the rear engine was completed.

Rebuilding the rear engine is basicly the same as the front
Remove the gearbox, the cylinder block, the bottom cover, the driver assembly and the bearings.

Once the parts are cleaned and dried, the bearings are installed and lubed, the driver assembly installed and the bottom cover installed.

The cylinder block and valve gear were installed.
I changed the tration tire to a low profile neoprene band instead of the O ring.

After the rear engine assembly was tested on a piece of track the gearbox was disassembled, cleaned and reassembled with fresh grease.

Once assembled, the gearbox was installed and the old open framed motor was replaced with a can motor Jim sent me.
The motor is held in place with sylicone.
Once the sylicone had dried I reconnected the front and rear engines.

To make the loco more DCC friendly I rewired it.
Orange and grey wires were soldered to the motor.
A red wire with a short section of ultra flexible wire was wired to the front engine as it picks up power from the right rail.
Blue and white wires were run through the boiler for the head light.

After the boiler was installed the wires were all run out the back where they will connect in the tender.
A black wire is connected to the rear engine frame at the drawbar screw and also runs to the tender.
The rear engine frame picks up power from the left rail.

I replaced the large 12 volt headlight with a smaller headlight with a white LED. A resistor will be added in series in the tender.

To help improve electrical pick up I am adding wipers to the tender wheels.
The wipers were made from strips of .003" phosphorous bronze with a wire soldered in the center.

Ray, this is one part of our hobby I just don't do,because if I took it apart I probably couldn't put it back together. You have made it look easy and skillfully done. Pat

Ray,
I have a mantua 2662T which needs her tires replaced. Can you tell me where you got the neoprene bands instead of the o-ring tires? Also can you tell me more about the can motor replacement stats?
Keep the shafts turnin,
& The lights burnin,
John
